Opportunities List July 2016

The Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) 2016 summer meeting “Big Data: Frontiers in Earth Sciences” is coming to Durham, NC from July 29-22. As part of this event, the South Big Data Hub and ESIP will co-host an exhibit of data visualizations on Wednesday, July 20 from 5:30-7:00 PM at the 21c Hotel, showcasing the diversity, creativity, and impact of the research done by the Earth and data science communities through visualizations and graphical presentations of research results.

Cryptocurrency Scholarship Opportunity for Underrepresented Minorities and Women. The MIT Digital Currency Initiative will be running an Intro to Cryptocurrencies Bootcamp August 21-26, 2016 at the MIT Media Lab. Rising sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduates are eligible to attend. Applications for the camp and the scholarship are due by July 11, 2016. 

Submit an abstract to the “Big Data in the Geosciences” session at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting (Denver, 25-28 September). Abstracts are due July 12. Presentations that showcase new capabilities and opportunities in big data which tackle complex, multidisciplinary problems, as well as those that transform the “small data” science that most of us carry out daily, are welcome. 

The Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition Initiative (GODAN) will host a high-level summit in New York City September 15-16, 2016. The GODAN summit seeks to unite leaders, researchers, farmers, students, and others – public, private, and non-profit – around a collaboration on agriculture and nutrition data openness. Early bird rate is available until July 15. 

PyData Carolinas Call for Proposals extended to July 24. Presentations focusing on Python as well as other languages used in data science (e.g. R, Julia) are welcome. Content can be at the novice, intermediate, or advanced level.  

SDSC Summer Institute 2016: HPC for the Long Tail of Science. August 1-5, 2016 at San Diego Supercomputer Center at UC San Diego. 

Hands-on Materials Project Workshop. August 11-12, 2016 in Berkeley, CA.

Open Science in Big Data (OSBD) Call for Papers. This workshop, which is being held in conjunction with the IEEE Big Data Conference in Washington, D.C. December 5-8, is soliciting papers that focus on the current practices of and future directions for democratizing big data analytics and improving reproducibility of research in big data.
